The CATS team, based at Central London’s Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, is a dedicated retrieval unit within the NHS. Operating round the clock, they facilitate the transportation of critically ill children to and from critical care services across the country. Their pivotal role ensures timely access to essential care, delivering top-tier clinical services even on the move.
The CATS team approached Kinseed with two primary challenges. Firstly, the management of the huge amount of administrative data involved in each and every transport was becoming increasingly difficult. Secondly, offering remote support to clinical teams during ambulance travel was limited to conventional means, such as a phone call.

Kinseed rolled out SwiftCare and revolutionised the way data is gathered, used, and managed throughout the patient’s journey.
MediLog for Referral Management
As the initial solution to address the CATS team’s challenges, Kinseed implemented MediLog, an integral component of the SwiftCare suite. Hosted in a secure cloud environment, Kinseed collaborated with the CATS team to create a customised form and workflow engine. This initiative aimed to replace an outdated manual process predominantly handled through Excel and paper-based forms.
MediVue and MediConnect for Remote Patient Monitoring
In addition to deploying MediLog, Kinseed collaborated with the CATS team to tackle a common issue encountered by transport teams. Kinseed introduced the MediConnect device to enable mobility for the team’s current fleet of patient monitors. Positioned in the ambulance alongside each transported child, these monitors track vital signs. Simultaneously, the MediConnect device securely collects, encrypts, and compresses this data, transmitting it over 4G, 3G, and established Wi-Fi networks to a protected cloud-based environment.
Kinseed then integrated MediVue, a web-based remote monitoring application. This tool gathers data from MediConnect and presents it in an intuitive dashboard with detailed views. This configuration empowers clinicians stationed “back at base” to access real-time waveforms and metrics of transported patients. This accessibility allows experts and consultants to offer their crucial clinical insights to all patients in transit, expanding their impact beyond those coincidentally sharing the same ambulance.
Impact and Results
Following the adoption of these technologies, the CATS team has successfully completed over 3,000 remotely monitored journeys. Each of these journeys has witnessed a notable enhancement in patient safety and oversight. Additionally, the duration of the average handover at the conclusion of a transport has seen a substantial reduction. Estimates indicate an average time-saving of 30 to 90 minutes per referral.
